What is a Managed Service Provider?

Managed Service Providers or MSPs are an external organisations that remotely manages a company’s IT Infrastructure, their end-user systems or both. Typically, an MSP works on a proactive basis and under a subscription model. In many cases, the Engineers within an MSP will work remotely from a Service Desk, so there is no need to wait for an Engineer to visit your office every time you need to resolve an issue within the organisation.

Small and medium-sized businesses are the typical customers of a Managed Service Provider as these types of organisations tend to have limited in-house IT capabilities and expertise. However, larger and multi-chain organisations may also hire MSPs as an extension to their in-house IT Department or for additional and specialist IT Consultancy on their IT Infrastructure.

What are the benefits of working with Managed Service Providers?

Flexibility and Scalability

Cost savings one of the main reasons a Managed Service Provider are appointed as Managed IT Services work on a subscription-style model where customers pay a monthly fee for a third-party provider’s services. This means that your chosen Managed Service Provider are able to scale operations to your requirements and can be an ideal way to offload some of the burdens of setup, maintenance and upgrades that come from an organisation’s current IT department.

Cyber Security and Compliance

Cyber criminals are targeting organisations every day and data breaches are becoming more and more apparent, so a solid cyber security should be at the forefront of your organisation’s IT Security strategy which a Cyber Security Consultant can help with. Keeping your customer’s sensitive data safe is critical. Under GDPR, which came into force in 2018, if your organisation was to experience a data breach you could face a significant fine if data is not protected properly. While organisations who have large in-house IT teams will have robust security procedures in place, those that are smaller may not have sufficient procedures implemented and require Cyber Security Consultancy from a Managed Service Provider.

Larger Managed Service Providers, such as ourselves, have a large IT Consultancy team that have knowledge of the most advanced security systems, software and hardware on the market including Cisco Meraki, Sophos and the entire Microsoft product stack including SharePoint, Azure and Microsoft Dynamics 365. Our team of IT Consultants will work with you to develop a cyber security strategy built around the right combination of technology, solutions, services and progresses to your business requirements and growth plans.

Disaster Recovery and Backup

In the event of a Disaster such as Malware or Ransomware attack, fire or theft the ability for your organisation to be back up and running as quickly as possible is crucial. Being unprepared in these situations can impose many financial and non-financial costs such as loss of operations, software and reputational damage. Having a Managed Service Provider who provide a wide range of Disaster Recovery and Backup solutions such as Hybrid and Cloud is beneficial as these solutions can be configured to your organisation’s specifications.

Service Level Agreements

Managed Service Providers often provide their services under a Service Level Agreement or SLA. This is an agreement between the MSP and the client that spells out the performance expected by the client to the MSP. A Service Level Agreement may also be linked to an MSP’s pricing formula. For example, an MSP may offer a range of SLAs to customers, with the customer paying a higher fee for higher levels of service in a tiered pricing structure.

Emergency 24-hour IT Support

Some Managed Service Providers also provide 24-hour IT Support services. These Managed Service Providers will proactively monitor your organisation’s networks and provide remote and on-site Outsourced IT Support beyond typical working hours such as throughout the weekend and over Bank Holidays when other Managed Service Providers are closed. They also provide Emergency IT Support for issues such as server failure, cyber and Malware attacks.

Digital Transformation is an important process for keeping your organisation up to speed with the latest changes in technology. While it may sound simple, Digital Transformation is a journey and transforms every aspect of an organisation whether it is moving your organisation’s data from on-premise to the Cloud or revolutions way your employees communicate with each other throughout the day – whether they work in the office or remotely by using a workplace-based facility such as Microsoft Teams.
